DreamGen Review 2026: A Fiction Engine, Not A Companion

DreamGen turns up in searches for AI girlfriends, which is slightly misleading, and understanding why saves you an evening.
"Play games with your favorite AI characters or generate stories of any genre. You define the world, steer the plot, and our AI will do as you say."
That is a description of a writing tool, and an accurate one. DreamGen is for interactive fiction. If that is what you want, it is good at it. If you came looking for someone to talk to, you will feel the mismatch within twenty minutes.
What it is actually good at
Scenarios with real premises. You jump into something already shaped. Interview an enigmatic billionaire who turns out to be a vampire. A carnival. Pick one and you are immediately somewhere, with stakes, rather than staring at an empty box wondering how to begin.
Several characters in one scene. This is harder than it sounds and most products cannot do it. Multiple characters who stay distinct, react to each other and not just to you, inside one coherent scene, is what separates collaborative fiction from a chatbot conversation.
You steer rather than request. The framing is that you define the world and the model executes. For anyone who has wanted to run a long campaign and found character apps too thin for it, that is the right relationship with the tool.
A free tier that means it. Generous, no strings attached, in their own words, and in practice enough to judge the prose properly. The paid ladder then runs from around six dollars to around fifty, which is unusually well graded. Most competitors offer one price and hope.
Where the mismatch is
Nobody is waiting for you. A fiction engine starts when you start it. There is no character who noticed you have not been around for three days. The continuity is in the story you are building, which exists because you maintain it.
It is prose, and prose is the whole medium. No photo of her arriving mid conversation because you asked what she was wearing. No voice note. No video. If the thing you actually want is to see and hear a specific person, writing cannot substitute for it, however good the writing is.
One character is not the unit. The design serves worlds and casts. If you wanted one person who is yours and who accumulates, you are working against the grain of a tool built for breadth of fiction.
How to know which product you want
Ask yourself what you did last time you opened one of these.
If you wanted to build something, explore a premise, write a long story with turns you did not plan, you want a fiction engine. DreamGen is one of the best available and the free tier costs you nothing to confirm it.
If you wanted someone to be there, to remember that your week was bad, to send you a photo because you asked, to reply in her own voice, you want a companion. Those needs feel adjacent and they produce completely different software.
The test that separates them: close the tab and come back tomorrow. A fiction engine is exactly where you left it, which is correct behaviour for a tool. A companion should know you were gone.
Pick DreamGen if
You want interactive fiction and long campaigns, you enjoy steering a plot rather than having a conversation, multi character scenes appeal to you, and you are happy that the medium is writing.
Pick a companion app if
You want one character rather than a world. You want her to remember your history between sessions. You want her face to stay the same from the chat into the photos into the video. And you want voice notes and calls in the conversation itself.
At Sparkles the image generation runs on our own GPUs rather than calling a third party API, which is why the character keeps her face across everything she sends you. Daily free credits and no card needed.
Verdict
DreamGen is an honest, well built fiction engine with a free tier that respects you and a pricing ladder that makes sense. For interactive storytelling with several characters it is among the better things in this space.
It is not an AI girlfriend, it does not claim to be, and the searches that lead people here are mismatched to what they find. If you want a world, start it. If you wanted a person, that is a different product, and it is what we build.
